At least eight people have been killed by gunmen who are reported to have infiltrated and attacked a Jewish seminary in West Jerusalem.

Israeli media said that at least 30 were injured in the attack at the Mercaz Harav yeshiva in the Kiryat Moshe quarter of Jerusalem.

Reports said one of the attackers had an explosives belt and was shot dead.

It is the worst attack of its kind for a number of years. There were no attacks within Jerusalem during 2007.

The gunmen are said to have entered a dining room at the rabbinical seminary, where about 80 people were gathered.

There are reports of celebratory gunfire in Gaza after news broke about the attack.

The BBC's Crispin Thorold says this will be a particularly shocking incident for the Israeli public and Jewish people around the world - which comes at an extremely tense time.

Gunmen open fire at Israeli seminary; 7 killed

JERUSALEM — Two gunmen infiltrated a rabbinical seminary at the entrance of Jerusalem and opened fire after nightfall Thursday, killing at least seven, police and rescue workers said.

Israeli media said about 35 people were wounded.

Ambulances raced to the scene from around the city. Media reports said many people were wounded, Hundreds of police surrounded the area and searched the campus.

The gunmen entered a dining hall where about 80 people were gathered, witnesses said, and opened fire. "There are at least seven killed and 10 people wounded," said Eli Dein, director of Israel's rescue service.

The seminar is the Mercaz Harav yeshiva in the Kiryat Moshe quarter of Jerusalem, a well-known center of Jewish studies identified with the leadership of the Jewish settlement movement in the West Bank.

Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben Ruby said, "One or two terrorists infiltrated the Mercaz Harav seminary and opened fire in all directions. One terrorist was killed in an exchange of fire, and apparently he had an explosives belt." He said students were being evacuated from the building.

There were no attacks by Palestinian militants in Jerusalem during 2007, though police and the military claimed to have foiled many attempts. Between 2001 and 2004, at the height of Palestinian-Israeli fighting, Jerusalem was a frequent target of Palestinian attacks, including suicide bombings on buses.

In Gaza City, residents went out into the streets and fired rifles in celebration in the air after hearing news of the attack on the seminary.

Look at the paragraph above. :? this is all over the network news. no sympathy what so ever. anyways this is not good for the Palestinians as Israel i bet will send in more troops into Gaza.

UPDATE

Hamas praise

The school is a well-known centre for Jewish studies and most students are aged between 18 and 30.

It is said to identify with the leadership of the Jewish settlement movement - who believe the West Bank should be in Jewish and not Palestinian hands.

There were reports of celebratory gunfire in Gaza after news broke about the attack.

Hamas officials in Gaza welcomed the attack but stopped short of admitting responsibility.

The BBC's Crispin Thorold says this will be a particularly shocking incident for the Israeli public and Jewish people around the world - which comes at an extremely tense time.

Israel, he says, is likely to take retaliatory action.

Last week, Israeli forces launched a raid into northern Gaza in which more than 120 Palestinians - including many civilians - were killed.

Israel says the measures are designed to stamp out frequent rocket fire by Palestinian militants.

Recent rocket attacks have hit deeper into southern Israel, reaching Ashkelon, the closest large Israeli city to the Gaza Strip.

CNN is driving me insane!

i've heard shit like "we're not sure if this attack is related to the Israeli incursion on Gaza a few days ago"

and "they were killed while eating dinner"ohh poor souls. and "meanwhile Gaza is celebrating with gunfire"

of course CNN brings in its roster of Israelies crying how horrific, a massacre!

AIPAC and Israel are going to take advantage of this and milk it dry. They desperately need some good news on their side and this is it.

You really expect them to have any sympathy ? No way. Look how many Palestinian students have been massacred this past week and month.

@ Tim, you're right, but you also have to factor in just how bad things have been in Gaza lately. There's a reason why attacks like haven't happened in a while, it's because the Palestinians didn't want things to get any worst for themselves. But not they surely must feel like they have nothing to lose, things can't get worst. And if they do get worst, it wont matter because the people have probably lost their will to live any longer.

Extreme hopelessness can turn ordinary people into killers of themselves and others. I hate to see things like this happen. It is very, very sad for all involved. But it isn't surprising.

I was just listening to a right wing radio show out of Reno and was surprised that they mentioned the Gaza killing. He actually said, "Israel killed lots of people, including children" BEFORE mentioning this incident. I was shocked to hear the truth on the radio.

But overall, the coverage is Lies, Lies, Lies, as usual.
