A group of scientists claim that the universe's end may come with a standstill, not a bang, as time could literally be running out.
The idea that time could cease has been set out by a group of scientists from the University of the Basque Country, Bilbao, and the University of Salamanca, Spain, the site telegraph reported.
The motivation for this radical suggestion comes from an alternative explanation for 'dark energy' - the mysterious antigravitational force that has been postulated to clarify a cosmic phenomenon.
A decade ago, astronomers noticed that distant supernovae - exploding stars on the very fringes of the universe - seem to be moving away from earth faster than those nearby.
The Iberian team's proposal claims distant galaxies only seem to be accelerating because our telescopes are essentially looking back in time to see them, at a time when time was going faster.
They argue that it might be the passage of time that is slowing down.

very weird.
It is possible that time is linked to gravity. No one really understands this yet.
Good find, Zee.

So in about a gazillion years I could be dead?????
Maybe if we pay more taxes this can be averted.

if you look at something a billion light years away then you are seeing where it was a billion years ago and not where it is now. The dark matter could be places where there are things with gravity that either to not emit light, no longer emit light or are very very far away.

good point ry.
Gravity itself has always bothered me. I tried to tell someone that noone really understands it and he kept saying "yes they do, and spouted the algebraic formula for it" LOL. He actually never understood what I was trying to say.
No matter how you talk about gravity, it's always a description of it, never any mechanistic info on how it works, even if you use the einstein "ball on a flexible surface"....still just a description.
Gravity is the only thing (I think?) that acts instantaneously, no "speed of gravity" exists, and this is over huge distances. They measured this sh*t.
Another thing that always kind of bothered me was the size of the moon as viewed from earth being exactly the same size as the sun (as viewed). Perhaps that is because they are similar density and thats the only way staable orbits would work? Or is it the fact that we live in a weird-ass fabricated illusory world, LOL.
Anyways, cool stuff to ponder.

I am definitely not qualified to even pretend to know what I am talking about here but isn't time nothing more than human perception of day and night and seasons? In other words, time is nothing more than our movement around the Earth's axis and around the sun. How could time be connected to gravity? My first thought about time coming to a standstill or slowing down was that it was suggesting either the earth's spin is slowing or the earth's orbit is slowing. I guess it is possible.
On a side note, we had a strange discussion in one of my classes about a week ago about how our current decade is coming to an end and how it seems like it just started. Think about it. We all thought it was weird...even our 60 year old or so professor. Of course, that would seem to suggest time is speeding up. I dunno. WACKY STUFF!
