Egyptian forces greatly reduce their presence along the breached Gaza border after they fail to stop Gazans from rushing into the country.
“Palestinian movement is passing through the gate without any opposition from Egyptian security forces,” Adel Salman, an Egyptian government employee who lives near the border point said and added he had seen truckloads of police leaving.
An Egyptian security source claimed late on Friday the forces pulled back from crossing points after a security man was shot and wounded.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian state news agency MENA claimed 22 Egyptian security men were injured while trying to contain the crowd.
Palestinians have used a bulldozer to tear down two more sections of a fence separating the Gaza Strip from Egypt near the Rafah border crossing. The move came just after Egyptian security forces used water cannons and electric batons to push back Gaza Strip residents attempting to cross the border.
Around 700,000 Palestinians have entered Egypt in search of supplies since parts of the security barrier were breached starting on Tuesday.
Egyptian security forces had said earlier that they would close the border at 1300 GMT on Friday. The United States and Israel had called for Egypt to close the border as soon as possible.
