Physicists wary of junking light speed limit yet

GENEVA —

Physicists on the team that measured particles traveling faster than light said Friday they were as surprised as their skeptics about the results, which appear to violate the laws of nature as we know them.

Hundreds of scientists packed an auditorium at one of the world’s foremost laboratories on the Swiss-French border to hear how a subatomic particle, the neutrino, was found to have outrun light and confounded the theories of Albert Einstein.

“To our great surprise we found an anomaly,” said Antonio Ereditato, who participated in the experiment and speaks on behalf of the team.

An anomaly is a mild way of putting it.

Going faster than light is something that is just not supposed to happen, according to Einstein’s 1905 special theory of relativity. The speed of light—186,282 miles per second (299,792 kilometers per second)—has long been considered a cosmic speed limit.

The team—a collaboration between France’s National Institute for Nuclear and Particle Physics Research and Italy’s Gran Sasso National Laboratory—fired a neutrino beam 454 miles (730 kilometers) underground from Geneva to Italy.

They found it traveled 60 nanoseconds faster than light. That’s sixty billionth of a second, a time no human brain could register.

“You could say it’s peanuts, but it’s not. It’s something that we can measure rather accurately with a small uncertainty,” Ereditato told The Associated Press.

If the experiment is independently repeated—most likely by teams in the United States or Japan—then it would require a fundamental rethink of modern physics.

“Everybody knows that the speed limit is c, the speed of light. And if you find some matter particle such as the neutrino going faster than light, this is something which immediately shocks everybody, including us,” said Ereditato, a researcher at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

Physicists not involved in the experiment have been understandably skeptical.

Alvaro De Rujula, a theoretical physicist at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research outside Geneva from where the neutron beam was fired, said he blamed the readings on a so-far undetected human error.

If not, and it’s a big if, the door would be opened to some wild possibilities.

The average person, said De Rujula, “could, in principle, travel to the past and kill their mother before they were born.”

But Ereditato and his team are wary of letting such science fiction story lines keep them up at night.

“We will continue our studies and we will wait patiently for the confirmation,” he told the AP. “Everybody is free to do what they want: to think, to claim, to dream.”

He added: “I’m not going to tell you my dreams.”

I saw this earlier. Pretty crazy if true. Maybe one day we'll find something which can move faster than a neutrino!

It's not just for breakfast any more.

"Single acts of tyranny may be ascribed to the accidental

On the one hand:

Establishment science has no credibility. NASA, once the pinnacle of human scientific achievement, now promotes global warming. This calls into question any statement made by establishment scientists. I'd be interested in hearing what scientists who don't believe in global warming have to say about these faster-than-light shenanigans.

On the other hand:

The theory of relativity is just that, a theory. Even Einstein was blindsided by the emergence of quantum physics.

science is polluted by economics and politics.

Correlation studies are not scientific there is no cause and effect its just junk science and I blame the Brits. The most statistically illiterate population in the world. They can read of course unless its numbers then they have no clue what they mean. That's because their math program is geared to calculus and not stats.

The light speed limit is clearly a political thing. Politics and celebrity has screwed most of the important science, that's true. Don't even try to oppose any of Einstein's views, even though easily half of them were plagiarized from other physicists.

Here's an obvious fact that disproves the light speed limit. Gravity. There are still dorks that think that gravity (waves, or whatever the force turns out to be) moves at the speed of light.

If this were true, even at small distances like those in our solar system, well the planets would fly apart.

Imagine if the sun applied its force on the earth to where the earth was located 10 minutes ago (about how long light from sun takes to reach us I think). Do the math, it doesnt work, gravity has to be instantaneous. And don't try to tell me the sun somehow "knows" where the earth will be in 10 minutes. Einstein called this "creepy" so he refused to acknowledge the simple hypothesis and went for one involving "bending of time space"...the model of the bowling ball on a trampoline. Gee, a model that requires action of the force it attempts to explain. Nuts.

gravity does not have to move, gravity is the curvature of space in which things travel. like the computer screen where you see the words. its like saying the highway is faster than the cars.

light has been frozen before so its speed can change, but the normal top speed of light is the fastest known unless the nutrino exp can be repeated. Personally i see it as nothing but journalistic hype. I never believe stuf like this about science especially if it is from Europe. So sad because they used to be so great at it.

evey year they say oh einstein was wrong to make a story and then its turns out nope he wasnt wrong.
