Why do people smoke? I'm serious. I'd really like honest answers. I mean it's not like you smoke a cigarette and are instantly addicted. It's something you have to willingly do over and over before there is an addiction.

So why do people even start? Is it curiosity? for weight loss? Self hate? Just to break a law for the sake of it and feeling rebellious? Monkey see monkey do? Herd mentality? Needed a prop for ice breaking? Was an instant group to join for the socially inept? GF/BF did it? Parents did it? Looked cool in the movies? Saw an ad in a magazine and decided it was for you? Associated it with other fun things like parties, porn, drinking, action movies etc because it's normally done at those things or advertised with it? Lked the smell of it? Hated the smell of it and wanted to annoy others? Just think smoke itself is cool looking? Oral fix? Just board out of your mind and did it to kill time?

What's the deal. Someone here smokes or used to do it. Explain why you started. And please don't say "i don't know."

And if you continue, then why? DO you like it? Do you like to spend a few thousand a year on slow poisons? Enjoy how it makes your breath? Just like to burn things?Get a small sense of sticking to the man by buying into billions of dollars of advertising for a life long product? Stress relief? Is there buzz?

I started smoking when I was 12. Not really sure why exactly, just saw people smoking around me and I bummed a few smokes (I suppose you would call that herd mentality?) and by the time I was 14 I started buying my own packs. I mean I was offered a smoke and I kinda liked the taste and it didn't kill me like all the over exadurated anti-smoking campaigns told me it would. I've quit more than a few times and once quit almost entirely for 4 years (I probably had about 5 smokes over the 4 years, it was from when i was 17-21). I started again when I moved to Oregon for a few reasons. For starters my parents were just pissing me off and I was really stressed out. And a lot of the time it was just boredom. I actually enjoy the taste of some tobacco, I'm pretty picky about it though. I don't buy Marlboro or Camels, I usually buy imported European rolling tobacco like this stuff:

Rolling your own smokes eliminates the fiberglass filters, preservatives, and additives which are probably worse for your health than the tobacco its self. Why it is legal to market these chemicals for human consumption I have no idea. I use rice based papers that have no glue or propellants in them. Usually I smoke about 2-5 cigarettes, and sometimes I'll quit for a week or so if my allergies get bad or I'm just feeling particularly unhealthy. While it definitely isn't a good decision in regards to respiratory health, smoking does have it's benefits. Depending where you work, you can get extra breaks to smoke. It does seem to relieve stress somewhat but I think the more addicted you get, the more stressed out you become when you don't have a smoke, that's the main reason

I don't smoke as much as I could. I'm really not concerned about living past 60 so the health issues aren't that big of a deal to me, I've known several older people who lived past 80 and smoked at least two packs a day, which is far more than I smoke. I'm a pretty hygienically conscious person so I don't let it affect the way me or my breath smells usually. I brush my teeth 3 times a day and Ill chew gum or mints or something if I know I won't be able to brush my teeth for a while. I also am pretty aware of the state of my respiratory system as I used to be pretty athletic, it's really bad to smoke when your bronchi are expanded from exercise or coughing etc. I also don't throw butts out car windows, subject others to second hand smoke, or clambake cars with cigarettes. I might quit for a while again soon though, as I am having some problems with dryness in my tendons/ligaments, and I need to try and stay as healthy as possible from now on. I'm sure the cigs don't help with that issue.

There are constantly people with severe obesity coming into my work and buying a carton of cigs with some honey buns, candy bars, energy drinks, soda, etc. I wouldn't consume any of those things. I know a lot of people that don't smoke that aren't anywhere near as healthy as me. I don't drink soda or eat anything with high fructose corn syrup in it usually, don't use caffeine or prescription drugs, and I would still be exercising every day if I wasn't nursing achilles tendinitis.

As far as the cost, I only spend around 40 dollars max on tobacco a month usually. When you buy rolling tobacco (or pipe tobacco as it is now called in the states  ) it's easy to make it last for a while. Why someone would spend over 100 dollars a week on commercial cigarettes that have fiberglass filters, propellants, preservatives etc. is beyond me. I just smoke tobacco, I'm not into smoking embalming fluid and rocket fuel, let alone paying to do it. Even before I actually smoked I liked the smell of it too, ever since I smelled my grandpas pipe tobacco when I was 6.

Seriously I started smoking because I wanted to see if I could blow smoke rings. I know that sounds retarded, but I was just curious to see if it would be as easy as I thought it would be. But I started smoking right around the same time as I started drinking so they just kind of went hand in hand.

But that is funny that you mention that you have to smoke over and over before addiction sets in. It's so true!

I asked many people that same question and their answer always surprises me (because it's always the same). They started smoking because of coolness, didn't like it at first but then just hung in there and eventually got addicted.. -baffling-. Just to see wtf was so appealing about smoking I tried a few puffs. I hated it and never tried it again. Tried weed to see what was the buzz..got sick in a most unfashionable way and never tried it again. Same for alcohol (in large amounts that is). I think I might be addicted to food but that's something I can do or don't.

I think a lot of over eaters just eat when they are bored. I think people don't realize that boredom is a form of stress. That's why I think video games, comics whatever are healthy habits for that because they don't change your body. And they are active in that you have to be playing or reading where as things like TV/Movies etc are mentally passive. Unless it's a movie with subtitles, then you're reading. Or if you're watching something in a second language then its like studying. I know some people that prefer subtitles to dubbing not only because it catches the original voice but because reading it just enhances the pleasure of it.

I almost wrote to see if you could blow smoke rings in the first post but I didn't because I thought it would be offensive assuming no one would do that or admit that.

Now I understand liking the taste and I think rolling it is far better for your pocket than purchasing it in cig form. But I think to do it for stress relief is strange. How does it relieve stress when you know what it does? Seems like it adds stress because by reducing the normal ability of your coping mechanism the person is creating a crutch. Something they suddenly need that they wouldn't otherwise. This is more true for pot. Heavy pot smokers can't deal with any normal level of stress without a complete flip out unless they have weed.

There are a few reasons why I could just start eating. Boredom is the lesser one. Frustration is a big one. When I have stress I eat less but I still get fatter for some reason. Stress can kill a person and I'm speaking from personal experience here. Okay not that experienced because obviously I'm not dead. Close though.

The people I know who smoke seem to find it easier to collect their thoughts when smoking. It gives them focus.

It's really just a combination of things. Boredom, stress, social habits, needing an excuse to step outside at work for a while. If I thought it was becoming a detrimental health problem it probably would make me more stressed out. I mean I could probably quit again for at least a month if I tried I'm really just not that motivated to quit until I recover a bit and am able to exercise without hurting myself again. I have an extremely addictive personality and I also spend excessive amounts of time with music, cooking, studying politics, electronics, network administration, cars and whatever else I feel like studying. I used to exercise at least one to three hours a day and practice martial arts but that all stopped due to a lack of time/money/motivation. Once I'm in better health I intend to start Jujitsu again, I used to enjoy it a lot. But yeah I can't stand smoking after I've been running. When I used to go running every day I would never smoke.
