Two Russian nuclear attack submarines have been patrolling off the eastern coast of the United States in a rare move that has alarmed the Pentagon. One of the two submarines has remained in international waters just 200 miles (320 kilometers) off the coast of New York City, while the second sub left and moved south to make a port call in Cuba, the New York Times reported on Tuesday. The US government and the military have so far refused to comment on the report. However, the newspaper, citing Defense Department officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that Washington is suspicious of Russia's motives behind such an unusual mission. "Any time the Russian Navy does something so out of the ordinary it is cause for worry," a senior Defense Department official who has been monitoring reports on the submarines' activities said. The Pentagon, meanwhile, expressed concern about the presence of the subs, but shrugged off the move as Russia just trying to 'show off'. Defense Department officials declined to speculate on what weapons might be aboard the two submarines, classified as Akula Class nuclear-powered attack submarines, first deployed by the Soviet Navy in 1986. http://www.presstv.com/detail.aspx?id=1 ... =351020602

Really what else can Russia do? I mean they've been wildly provoked, perhaps even moreso than during the Bush years. I would resort back to Cold War techniques if I were in any kind of military leadership role over there. Obviously they don't want to yank diplomats out of their embassies and fall all the way back to the icy relations with us, but... what choice do they have? Maybe that's just the way I've been seeing it, roughly since the conflict with Georgia/South Ossetia..

Other countries have got to show their strength if they hope to stand their ground.

One thing Russia can do is sell more decent arms to Iran. Or Lebanon, since that would piss off Israel and hence the US, which is one in the same.

Russia will only defend it's own and will not defend Iran. It will only sell arms to Iran if it's geopolitically smart. They haven't sold that many arms to Iran so something in their relationship isn't keeps it from doing that. We'll see.

China and Russia both said if Israel attacks Iran and the US allows it, that their response will be World War. I sincerely doubt that means Russia will just sit back and ignore Iran in a time of need. Because the alternative is to watch strategically or resource rich countries get picked off one by one. It has to stop somewhere. And sooner would be best.
