Hatteras Museum debunking the "lost" colony myth. Those that promote the lost colony myth rely solely on David Beers Quinn, a man hired by the Roanoke Tourist commission to "research" about the colony. Of course what they selected out of what he came up with was motivated by economics not historical truth. Others get their version from Paul Green's fictional outdoor drama. Paul Green being the racist that he was an appealing to a 1930s audience of equal tolerance, could not stomach the idea of White English marrying Native Indians and so he simply changed it and made a "mystery" as to what happened. A mystery also sells more tickets.
And lastly the laziest bunch, simply do a wiki search and recite the BS drivel that is wikipedia. These hot heads yell the loudest about something they know nothing about. They couldn't even write Croatoan and ignorantly called it Croatan for years. Wiki is a complete waste of time and an appeal to the lowest common denominator.
Not once in the primary sources is it ever called Croatan. And it wasn't a Roanoke colony it was the Croatoan colony. That is where they lived, planted food, who they were allies with and where they died. November 2009 and April 2010 excavations under UK archeologist Mark Horton with the Mayor of Bideford, Andy Powell have found North Devon pottery mixed with Native American artifacts. Other ground breaking finds are in the process of being cataloged, DNA tested, and published for a BBC special. Interest have also been expressed by Discovery and the History channel. By chance, because of the volcano eruption in Iceland, Horton and his team were left stranded on Hatteras Island for an extra week. Working with local historian and author Scott Dawson, the UK team uncovered nearly their weight in thousands artifacts, both Native and English. Had the focus been on Hatteras where the colony actually was, rather than in Roanoke where the out door drama and a historian hired by a tourist bureau polluted and misdirected, clearly documented history, this discovery may have come much sooner.
More interesting is how an event of this magnitude, the birth place of America, can be covered up, and mythology left as an assumed un-researched fact for so long. But if one looks at a the myths about the even larger discovery of America and the whole Columbus narrative taught in schools, with its own Holiday, it hardly comes as a shock that we could be lied to about other events. So why the distortion? It didn't just start with the play in Manteo, although that is where it picked up the most steam. King James hated Sir Walter Raleigh and had him arrested and executed after Queen Elizabeth died. He had a vested interest to allow the charter to wither and die, to remove any claims to the new land for his political and economic rivals. He had a personal interest in promoting the idea that the territory named after himself, James Town, be thought of as the first colony. Later when Rockefeller bought the outdoor museum of Colonial Williamsburg, they also have an economic interest in being the "first" colony. It just doesn't sell as well to call it the second colony. However, if pressed, they will admit that there was a colony before that in North Carolina but they will trump it up as the "lost" colony and place it in Roanoke.
How could so many educated people get it wrong? Because they regurgitate what they were told in school. And when the school gets it wrong or lies on purpose, then the myths become historized. No one bothered to actually look up the primary sources and see the very clear picture. It makes you wonder what else you have been taught that is rubbish and what other massive events even in recent times, could be being lied about. Will the future text books pretend like Iraq had WMDs, or that intelligence made it appear that way, but incompetence led to a large mistake? Or will they tell the truth about the Niger forgeries, and Downing Street minutes, PNAC etc which show that there was no mistake at all and that the WMDs claim was a known lie and done intentionally anyway, as a way of serving a more acceptable pretext for a war the US had been planning for over a decade?
Congratulations to Hatteras Island, for being the original colony with Sir Walter Raleigh of whom the capital of the state is named after. And I find it to be a complete slap in the face that Roanoke would lie about history in order to make a buck, and attract tourist to their area. If you want to see the play on Roanoke go ahead. It is actually a well done play entertainment wise. Just know that it is FICTION and based on a purposely twisted account of history to serve their own interest.

And if you really want to get into it the English were not trying to colonize the New World. They were on a recon mission to attack Spanish ships coming back from the Caribbean and decades later when James town was established, its main purpose was to grow tobacco and send it back to England. That is why they send hundreds of men and only a handful of women. Colonization came much much later as the result of a new invention which allowed for a better way to process wool. This made it more profitable to cover land with sheep and with people. As sheep wool was a renewable resource that could be sold, it was worth more than the tenant collection system which ultimately had to recycle the money supply back the the crown from the people. When the land became worth more the English needed a way to drive the tenets out. So they raised taxes and prices until people either paid more than what sheep would bring in or they went into debt. To avoid debtors prison they were sent to the Americas or Australia. This was the reason for mass immigration, not religious freedom or any of that typical tripe. People were forced often as indentured servants to go work for the land lords in the New World to grow tobacco, sugar and cotton, and look for gold. Very few came because of religion, or simple adventure. It was a choice between moving or going to jail.
