They did and back then there even was a documentary on ducth tv how they did it.
It aired only once and added to the "groundbreaking spirit" of cnn.

Just the fact that they're acting all scared when they're on camera and then laughing and joking and basically making fun of the viewers when they're off air. And the premise behind the scud missle was obviously 'we're faking shit'.
