BEIRUT (Reuters) - Hizbollah rockets killed 12 soldiers and at least three civilians in Israel on Sunday, the deadliest day of the war for Israel, as Lebanon rejected a draft U.N. resolution to end the 26-day-old conflict.

Israeli bombardment of southern Lebanon killed at least 19 civilians and a Lebanese soldier.

I was speaking to someone recently about suicide bombing. In the Quran it says that you cannot kill civilians (women, children, elderly folk...) during Jihad. So my question was, how do they justify suicide bombing?

The answer was so simple I almost laughed. He said that in Israel everyone is required to join the military at some point or another. So, technically, they can all be thought of as soldiers. And he assured me that every suicide bomb does end up killing at least one or two reserve soldiers.

Suicide bombing cannot be justified by Islam. There is nothing in the Quran to say that. Yes the Quran teaches a muslim to defend and attack at all times when there is injustice and corruption in the land. i.e. Soldiers are a legitimate target, but not civilians. Islam implicitly says women, children and older men should never be harmed. Never.

From a secular POV well these guys are suicide bombers, It's wrong, but you can empathise with their hatred.

The question to me would be -- Why do people always ask about suicide bombers and not about Israelis who kill civilians?

The IDF killed no less than 82 Palestinian children before one Israeli child lost his life in the Intifada that started in 2000.

As a matter of fact the IDF regularly targets civilians, gunning down kids, blowing people up in their homes, attacking housing cmplexes with F-16s.
Why make an issue a of suicide bombers?

No, the point is that you cannot harm a person that does not pose an immediate threat to you. Those civilians were unarmed at that time, they didn't pose a threat for the time being. Therefore, in this case, it is forbidden. They are still civilians.

You are all misreading me. Though I can emphatize with them completely, I have never condoned suicide bombing. I am just telling you how the bombers justify suicide bombings as a form of Jihad.
