US President George W Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair should drop their confrontational policies and apologise to Iran to resolve the current stand-off over its nuclear programme, according to Professor Jean-Pierre Lehmann.

"Ideally, Mr Blair and Mr Bush should go to Tehran, ask the Iranian people for forgiveness, and then, as they say, take it from there," said the French-born Professor of International Political Economy.

"This will be infinitely more effective than sanctions, let alone warfare," he said in a letter to the Financial Times published Friday.

Lehmann, who is a founding director of the Lausanne-based Evian Group, an international coalition of corporate, government and opinion leaders, was writing about the roots of the crisis in the Middle East caused by interference by western governments.

"The interventions and impositions by the 'west,' both Europe and the US, in the Middle East have been almost invariably negative, both in their motivations and in their consequences," he suggested.

"While we (rightly) urge the Japanese to apologise to the Chinese, Koreans and other victims of the Pacific war and Japanese imperialism, the west owes profound apologies to Iran, the Iranians and the Arab people and societies of the Middle East," he said.

The 60-year old professor said the Bush administration sermonises about freedom and democracy to Iran, but it "should it not, at the very least, acknowledge that democracy in Iran was aborted by the UK and the US in 1953 with the overthrow of Mohammad Mossadegh." "The US-UK then imposed and strongly supported the dictatorial monarchical rule of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi as shah of Iran until he was finally overthrown by the Iranian people in 1979," he said.

I would have to agree with that. There is too much confrontation and interference in the world today. Especially from the US.

Thats the nature of hypocracy. And it's not like the US didn't go ina kill Koreans and Chinese right after Japan did. We aloso supported Mao in the begining.

Bush and Blair will never appoliogize to Iran, they are just looking for excuses to start a war. When the propaganda fails they will use a false flag attack.

I agree that B & B won't apologize...to anybody....they'd rather gnaw off their own leg, but I dunno bout attacking Iran. Unless chimp-boy and his handlers have been playing rope-a-dope, they don't have the resources or muscle to take on Iran. Iran ain't Iraq...or Grenada...or Panama...or Afghanistan.
Iran almost kicked Saddam's ass when Saddam was at his peak, if we hadn't supplied him with weps (incl. poison gas), intel, positive propaganda and intl support Iraq might've been what it's becoming today a long time ago.
I saw the Iranian president being interviewed by Mike Wallace on 60 minutes tonight. What struck me is, the guy don't come across as no "whack job", he strikes me as a straightforward, lucid, reasonable, principled person. Of course, the holocaust-denial stuff is a bit weird, and the stories of Sharia punishments as well as the death penalty for 2 gay teens I once read about is problematic to say the least, but the wipe out Israel rhetoric is just standard traditional politician hyperbole. Besides those things,(the accuracy for which I have to depend upon the media), he seems like a leader doing what is best for his country, a country that's never threatened anybody.
He mentioned the 18 page letter he sent to Bush, the one summarily dismissed by the Bush junta as "a stunt", but which went unanswered... and unpublished in the MSM as far as I know, was briefly read by Wallace and what it said was sensible, honest, direct but polite, and deserving of a response.
I didn't see no "whack-job". I didn't see no dummy either, he could not be maneuvered, manipulated or dry-gulched by Wallace, who tried every trick in his book, and the Iranian president has a PHD in engineering and was a commando in the Iran-Iraq war.
I think Bush and his puppeteers are bullies, and bullies go for the weakest mark, not the strong ones. Of course I could be wrong, I never would've thought that Bush would invade Iraq till the campaign of WMD & terrorist bullcrap swung into full gear with Judith Miller et al. Then I could smell trouble.
I always knew Bush was "major-league asshole", but I never knew how much.
