WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States believes Iran has stockpiled enough nuclear fuel to make a bomb, U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen said on Sunday.

"We think they do, quite frankly," Mullen said on CNN's "State of the Union" program when asked whether Iran has enough fissile material for a nuclear weapon.

"And Iran having nuclear weapons, I've believed for a long time, is a very very bad outcome -- for the region and for the world," Mullen said.

A watchdog report issued by the International Atomic Energy Agency two weeks ago said Iran had built up a stockpile of nuclear fuel, raising alarm among Western governments that Tehran might have understated by one third how much uranium it has enriched.

The United States suspects Iran of trying to use its nuclear program to build an atomic bomb, but Tehran insists it is purely for the peaceful generation of electricity. Enriched uranium can be used to make nuclear weapons.

U.S. President Barack Obama's administration, which favors diplomatic engagement with Tehran to defuse the dispute over its nuclear intentions, called Iran's nuclear program an "urgent problem" the international community must address.

The IAEA report showed a significant increase in Iran's reported stockpile of low-enriched uranium (LEU) since November to 1,010 kg -- enough, some physicists say, for possible conversion into high-enriched uranium for one bomb.

The IAEA later said Iran was cooperating well with U.N. nuclear inspectors to help ensure it does not again understate the amount of uranium it has enriched, suggesting the uranium accounting shortfall might not have been deliberate evasion.

What a worthless statement. No serious reasoning, just a boogey man scare tactic for listeners who can't be bothered to think critically.

Robert Muller is a Bush appointee to the FBI. He admitted that they didn't have any evidence on the Al Omari Hijacker or any evidence on the Anthrax attack that linked it to thefirst 3 suspects they blamed it on, but they didn't it anyway and made charges anyway. There is no reason to believe anything he says about Iran.

Notice how they say Iran MAY have enriched uranium more than they said. Look going form 3% to 95% is huge. Going form 1 to 3 is not. Iran is no where near even close to having the materiel to make a bomb. And even if they had the stuff it is still along process from becoming a bomb. And once a bomb it is still along process to outfitting that to warheads.

Gates contradicts Mullen on Iran N-case

http://www.presstv.com/detail.aspx?id=8 ... id=3510203

US Defense Secretary says that Iran is not close to having a nuclear weapon, contradicting recent comments made by a US military official.

"They're not close to a stockpile, they're not close to a weapon at this point, and so there is some time," Robert Gates said Sunday on NBC.

This is while earlier in the day, head of the US military Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen in an interview with CNN had stated that Iran had enough fissile material to make a nuclear bomb. "We think they do, quite frankly."

Compared with recent comments by Mullen, Gates' comments indicate a much more positive approach towards Iran's nuclear program, which according to Tehran is designed purely for the civilian and peaceful applications of the technology.

Gates looked very cautious on the issue and said, "I think that there has been a continuing focus on how do you get the Iranians to walk away from a nuclear weapons program? They're not close to a stockpile. They're not close to a weapon at this point. And so, there is some time."

US President Barack Obama's administration claims to be favoring diplomatic engagement with Tehran to defuse the dispute over its nuclear program.

A UN nuclear watchdog official downplayed a report by a Capitol Hill-based institute claiming Iran has a 'break-out capacity' to build a bomb in late February think they're not there yet," said the UN nuclear official speaking on condition of anonymity. He also pointed out that the Iranian enrichment program is 'under surveillance at all times'.
