This is the kind of insanity I'm talking about. At some point you just know they'll want to legislate things like this.

US wants to paint the world white to save energy

LONDON(AFP) (AFP) - US Energy Secretary Steven Chu said Tuesday the Obama administration wanted to paint roofs an energy-reflecting white, as he took part in a climate change symposium in London.

The Nobel laureate in physics called for a "new revolution" in energy generation to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

But he warned there was no silver bullet for tackling climate change, and said a range of measures should be introduced, including painting flat roofs white.

Making roads and roofs a paler colour could have the equivalent effect of taking every car in the world off the road for 11 years, Chu said.

It was a geo-engineering scheme that was "completely benign" and would keep buildings cooler and reduce energy use from air conditioning, as well as reflecting sunlight back away from the Earth.

For people who found white hard on the eye, scientists had also developed "cool colours" which looked to the human eye like normal ones, but reflect heat like pale colours even if they are darker shades.

And painting cars in cool or light colours could deliver considerable savings on energy use for air conditioning units, he said.

Speaking at the start of a symposium on climate change hosted by the Prince of Wales and attended by more than 20 Nobel laureates, Chu said fresh thinking was required to cut the amount of carbon created by power generation.

He said: "The industrial revolution was a revolution in the use of energy. It offloaded from human and animal power into using fossil fuels.

"We have to go to a different new revolution that can severely decrease the amount of carbon emissions in the generation of energy."

Are you suggesting that we have no impact on the environment? or that scientist are lying about the data that the earth is increasing in temperature very quickly over the past 60yrs?

Average world temperatures went down from about 1940 to 1980, while there was plenty of industrialization going on. In the mid 70's the media tried to scar people with talk of global cooling.

Why do you think it went down in temperature(the reason)?

From the peak in 1943 it took until 1980 for those temperatures to be equaled. It's only a small drop in average temperatures but the trend is slightly down over that time period. It does not say what the source is but I bet those measurements are ground based, and even an impartial sampling of ground stations would contain some temperature increases solely due to the urban island heat effect. As I said satellite and balloon data show almost no change.

I'm not saying humans are causing the earth to heat up, but what would be wrong with temperatures a few degrees celsius higher? Much of the world lives in cold temperatures in the winter, I think they would appreciate warmer winters. It would also allow longer growing seasons. The thermodynamics of heat are such that temperatures in colder regions would rise much more than temperatures in warmer areas. Also as I said, more Co2 in the atmosphere will lead to more plant growth, ie. bigger harvests, which would help everyone including the worlds poor. The rise in sea levels of 20 feet mentioned in Al Gores Inconvenient Truth are just fear mongering, climatologists forecast only about a 1-2 foot increase in sea levels in the worst case scenario.

The media pushes the human caused global warming mantra all the time, even if I believed in it, that would give me some pause to think, since when did they (the establishment who owns the media) start trying to help out humanity?

Lol... I wouldn’t mind the Earth to warm up at first. I freakin hate winter and I live in Texas. Weather below 88 F is for the birds.

The thing is there is little known about the Earths temperature and how we are changing it or not changing it. Al Gore scaring people with out all the facts isn’t going to help anyone. I know doubt agree there. I also agree that this hype is used to impose regulation on the little guy while corps are dumping loads.

You can check out more about the data and info on climate change at this site: http://www.physicstoday.org/
Most papers are peer reviewed.

I live in Canada (southern Ontario) and the average high at the height of summer is only 80 F. 8) I don't like hot weather - over 85 F.

I couldn't stand living in Texas in the summer. No wonder your against global warming. :P

Yes but they have them everywhere like outside restaurants, bars, above sidewalks downtown... they even keep most of them on at night during the summer.
