the people that do stuff like that say that it is religion not culture. besides the punishment for having sex before marriage in islam is 100 lashes, that is enough to kill someone or cause some serious injury, that is written in the quran and no muslim can deny that.
even when i was religious (like praying 5 times a day, fasting in ramadan, reading quran in english and arabic daily, going on pilgramage, etc etc etc) i still thought that honour crimes were f-ing insane, yet often the most secular/unobservent muslims commit or think honour crimes are normal.
i had a stereotypical oppressed upbringing, it was a real horror, the only reason i haven't wrote a book about it is because my story would be far from unique and everybody would just yawn. non-muslim british girls just don't realise how lucky they are.

how did you get out of it I am curious because I think religion is a mental illness I am wondering what broke it for you and got you out of talking to your hand or the floor 5 times a day avoiding pigs, reading gibberish etc.
What broke Christianity for me was reading the Bible.

i dunno, when i was 11 and was exposed to other religions i thought they can't all be right and i was a atheist for a few years back then, i did come from a seriously dysfunctional family with insane parents and was so depressed at the time, i sunk into a black hole and couldn't get out of it, i couldn't think straight and felt like a zombie so i reverted back at around the age of 14, at the age of 15 i started to read a lot about islam and other religions and at 17 i pretty much made my mind up after seeing endless contradictions and strange things in every religion. but when your a muslim rejecting it is not an option as like a 1/3 of uk muslims think it ok to kill apostates (and it only takes one to get rid of you), so what ya do is twice a year dress up for eid and spend all day eating, the rest of the year you get on with your normal life, i know a lot of people that do that.
I only discuss controversial issues on the forum, my real life is pretty normal and mainstream.

being brought up in a religion is like being under a spell, for most people the spell is never broken.
and if ya family is deeply religious and dysfunctional (like mine was) the emotional scars are with you for life
contemporary christian families imo are mostly normal nice people. you rarely hear horror stories about them the way you would hear about muslim women.
