Post subject:  Opinions on this story about Hugo Chavez...?

I had a letter writing ping-pong match with another guy in my town's weekly local paper, centered mainly around Chavez, and in his final letter he throws in a reference to a translated speech by Chavez, referring to "the descendants of those who crucified Christ", mentioning Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting as the source. Basically the guy was trying to one-up me by claiming Chavez is an anti-semite. Uh boy, yeah, here we go again.
Well, I went to the FAIR site and found the article. I think the guy writing the letter probably found the quote in some business magazine, which cited FAIR as the source.
It's interesting, because it's taken out of context. So I responded in another letter, basically making the statement that the letter writer is full of shit, and that if he wasn't so lazy he could have gone to the FAIR site himself and seen things in a different light.
I was at a friend's place on the weekend, he's Jewish and a huge admirer of Chavez. He'd read the ping-pong letter writing match in the local paper, and was interested when I told him the Chavez speech, as it appeared in the corporate press, was manipulated.

Here it is:

He was disappointed when I showed it to him, because it still has the line "the descendants of those who crucified Christ".
Why would he say that, he asked, it's a stock anti-semite phrase that goes back a long ways.
It hit him, and he was disappointed.

Any thoughts?

Hugo Chavez wrote:
The world has an offer for everybody but it turned out that a few minorities--the descendants of those who crucified Christ, the descendants of those who expelled Bolivar from here and also those who in a certain way crucified him in Santa Marta, there in Colombia--they took possession of the riches of the world, a minority took possession of the planet’s gold, the silver, the minerals, the water, the good lands, the oil, and they have concentrated all the riches in the hands of a few; less than 10 percent of the world population owns more than half of the riches of the world.

Based strictly on the words in this translated passage, either he's saying "those who crucified Christ" and "expelled Bolivar" are part of the same minority, in which case I doubt he's talking about Jews, or that they are members of two separate minorities, in which case the first group is either the Jews or those possibly those in positions of power who feared Jesus, Jewish or not.

If he intends for them to be part of the same minority then my guess is that he is indeed talking about people in power who fear loosing their control, though I must admit that I do not know much about Bolivar as of right now.
