Report: Syrian Rebels Responsible for Houla Massacre

The massacre of over 90 Syrians which caught the world’s attention and renewed calls for war against the regime of Bashar al-Assad may have been carried out by rebel fighters, according to a new report.

A new report in one of Germany’s leading newspapers, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), the Houla massacre was in fact committed by anti-Assad Sunni militants, and most of the victims killed were members of the Alawi and Shia minorities, which have been largely supportive of Assad. The reports cites anonymous opponents of Assad who admitted their involvement in the massacre.

According to the report, rebel fighters attacked Syrian army road-blocks in a 90 minute battle, in which dozens were killed on both sides.

“According to eyewitness accounts,” the FAZ report continues, “the massacre occurred during this time. Those killed were almost exclusively from families belonging to Houla’s Alawi and Shia minorities. Over 90% of Houla’s population are Sunnis. Several dozen members of a family were slaughtered, which had converted from Sunni to Shia Islam. Members of the Shomaliya, an Alawi family, were also killed, as was the family of a Sunni member of the Syrian parliament who is regarded as a collaborator.”

The report continues: “Immediately following the massacre, the perpetrators are supposed to have filmed their victims and then presented them as Sunni victims in videos posted on the internet.”

Initial eyewitness accounts of the massacre, relayed by major western media outlets and Human Rights Watch, described the massacre as having been the work of Syrian forces and their heavy artillery. But other eyewitness accounts, like those from members of the Monastery of St. James in Qara, Syria, said the attack came from Sunni militants who then tried to frame it as a massacre by the regime, presumably in the hopes that it would provoke a foreign intervention to unseat Assad

Save civilians in Syria

Last month an attack on the village of Houla, Syria, left over 108 dead - including women and children. Now, 78 people in Qubair village are alleged to be the latest victims of Syria’s bloody conflict.

These are not the first atrocities to take place in Syria. Since mass protests began over a year ago, the Syrian government has responded with brutal force and almost 10,000 civilians have been killed.

The UN Security Council has repeatedly failed to protect the people of Syria, in part due to resistance from Russia. While Russia supported a UN Security Council Resolution on 14 April calling for ceasefire and a six-point peace plan, they continue to supply the Syrian government with weapons.

Tell Russia: stop bloodshed in Syria

Let’s press Russia – a key country blocking international action – to stand up against the brutality and prevent further loss of Syrian lives. Your message will go to Russia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Viktorovich Lavrov.

Massacres like Houla and Qubair can happen because the unregulated arms trade allows weapons into countries like Syria. That’s why we’re campaigning for a strong Arms Trade Treaty, due to be negotiated at the United Nations in July.

Dear Minister, Please use your influence to stop the bloodshed in Syria.

Over 9,750 Syrians, including more than 700 children, are reported to have been killed and many more injured since largely peaceful protests began in Syria in March 2011.

I was shocked by reports that 108 civilians have been massacred in the town of Houla, including 50 children. I urge you to help prevent further atrocities by using your influence on the Syrian authorities.

I have noted the government of Russia's support for the UN Security Council resolution of 14 April but continue to urge you to show leadership by suspending arms transfers to Syria immediately as they could be used to commit further human rights violations and further escalate violence.

The UN Security Council must move beyond condemnation and immediately refer the deteriorating situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court and make clear that such crimes are subject to universal jurisdiction.

It is also vital that you use your significant influence to pressure the Syrian authorities to follow their commitments under the 'six-point plan' in good faith. This would include:

- immediately endings its bombardment of residential areas
- restrain the Syrian military in Homs and other areas
- releasing all those people who have been arbitrarily detained
- allowing peaceful protest

The Syrian authorities must immediately allow full and unhindered access for humanitarian agencies and human rights organizations. As the killings escalate, the UN observer mission to Syria must have its scale and mandate enhanced, and the Syrian government must allow the Independent International Commission of Inquiry set up by the UN Human Rights Council to enter the country to investigate allegations of abuse by both sides of the conflict.

The situation is out of control. How many more victims must there be before Russia acts to stop crimes against humanity in Syria? I appeal to you to please help stop the bloodshed.

This is disappointing that a humanitarian organization like Amnesty International is peddling hardcore propaganda.. and because of their MO no one really even questions their reporting or if they are in fact accurate in their reporting. Where are any of their sources for all this bullshit?? this is far worse than the MSM spouting their crap Amnesty International has a certain amount of credibility because of who they are
