SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Kepler 22B, it doesn't quite have the same ring to it as the name Earth, but it could be the most similar planet to Earth that scientists have ever discovered.

"Definitely a good thing to know that there are other options," said Johanna Como of Springfield.

A very distant potential option, planet Kepler 22B, was just recently discovered by NASA using its Kepler telescope.

This planet, which we still know very little about, circles a sun very similar to ours at roughly the same distance.

A year on this planet takes place over 290 days and scientists believe it could be covered with water while having a rocky core.

While there are many similarities to earth, there are also some big differences. Kepler 22B is 2.4 times the size of Earth.

The planet size and density could impact our ability to live on the planet, but there could be alien life which is what some people in western Massachusetts are getting excited about.

"We're not alone, I have to believe in the size of the universe that we can't possible be the only ones around, there'd be other people, "said Tom Nostin of West Springfield.

But we won't be going there anytime soon.

"The sun is only about 7 light minutes away. But this planet is so far away that it takes light 600 years to reach us and with our current technology we have no hope of actually traveling there anytime in the distant or in the near future," said Richard Sanderson, Astronomer and Curator of Physical Science at the Springfield Science Museum.

The planet is believed to have a surface temperature of 72 degrees, we'll know more about the planet next summer after further study.

how do they know something 600 light years away has water and is 72 degrees. Wouldn't the best data mean it used to have those things 600 years ago but right now we dont know because we are looking at its past.

600yrs is relatively small in astrological terms

that's still what was there and not what is there assuming nothing changed is foolish sure water wouldn't go away in 600 years but the 72 degrees would change.

this planet is only one of thousands being found

phys everything they are looking at is at max 600 years old. I'd like to known how they guess the temperature how would they even know what it's orbit is odds are its not a perfect circle so its temperatures are going to change. It's water could also become ice. and how can they tell what the atmosphere if there even is one, is? We don't even know what Venus's is yet. I dont know how they come at saying there is a rocky core. how can they see anything at the core?


Europa a moon of Jupiter is a good candidate fore life and far closer. Oceans oxygen atmosphre magnetic feild all the goodies.

Spectrometry gives signatures to light and tells a lot of the story for us.
Yes it does not have a circular orbit kepler's law planetary motion tells us that as well as it is demonstrated. Yes 72 F is not a constant temperature. The surface temp chosen was likely to show that the 'weather' is habitable. it still has poles and temp difference across the planet.
they can tell atmosphere by the present of gas exchange observed through spectrometry.
