麻生太郎首相が党総裁を辞任する意向を表明した。2009年8月30日22時20分ごろ、NHKとのインタビューで答えた。NHKなど各局が民主の単独過半数の「当確」を報じ、政権交代が確実になる情勢を受けての発言だ。麻生首相は選挙結果について「責任を負わなければならない」「速やかに総裁選を行い、出直さなければならない」と述べた。今後については「一党員として自民党の再生に力を注ぐ」とした。

Aug 30 10:20pm (Japan time) Aso Taro is saying he is is going to retire. Aso holds himself responsible for the LDP's loss. He will have an election again as soon as possible. NHK and many companies are saying the JDP is now more than half of the lower house. They can rule without opposition. Big Changes are inevitable.

I campaigned for Yukio for 3 years trashing the LDP.
The LDP had a pension scandal. It was so bad a few secretaries out in charge killed themselves. LDP followed by inflating the yen to 125 a dollar, it is now 94.
Japan is sick of the US bases they have like 51 rapes a ear from it. Koizumi (LDP) expanded a base even after a referendum voted showed 90% against it.

Japan also wants nothing to do with the US wars. LDP sided with the neocons buying the ballistic missile defense shield, aiding them in Iraq and Afghanistan etc.

There is no reason for Japan to waste its money on that stuff.

The AP/WashPost articles were laughable, saying there would be no real change in Japan's relationship with the US and I think the AP even used language along the lines of "protector" in regards to our role in Japan. The news I am reading in English is nothing like the news I am reading in Japanese.

The UK papers make it seem like Japan wants less "reliance" on the US military.
Japan doesn't rely on the US the US relies on Japan. Japan doesn't have any bases in America. A US presence in Japan make them MORE of a target not less.

Japan wants to get rid of its obedience to Washington not "reliance."
No one wants American bases in Japan. And no one wants to help the US in Iraq and Afghanistan.
